June 29, 2016 - Fire Aid For Fort McMurray at Commonwealth Stadium
Sixteen major Canadian musical acts united for the cause to support Fort McMurray, which was devastated by forest fires this past spring, forcing over 80 thousand people to evacuate their northern Alberta homes. Over 30,000 people filled the infield and seats at Commonwealth Stadium for the show, which ran continuously, alternating on two side by side stages, for over 6 hours. Many of the acts were from or had ties to Alberta and most of them had played Fort Mac at some time in their careers. The event raised 2 million dollars for the United Way of Fort McMurray, with all money designated to help those who were affected by the fire. In many cases families lost everything they had including homes, personal possessions and vehicles, as they had to suddenly evacuate at a moment's notice. The event saw the reuniting of the original members of the band Harlequin, as well as the reunited remaining members of The Rankin Family, and saw some unique pairings of artists as everyone banded together to lend support. Corb Lund, besides performing, was also the host of the show.
